SUMMER SERIES   2017

A total of  SIX  rounds will be sailed, with SIX races being sailed EACH week, best FOUR rounds to count.   The same yacht must be sailed in each round, unless mechanical problems cannot be repaired at the lakeside.

ROUND ONE

Being more or less back on schedule, round one of the Summer Series took place as five skippers basked in the red hot sunshine with an adequate breeze filling the sails sufficiently to give some close racing.

A shorter course was set starting from between marks 1 and 2 to mark 6, up to mark 3, back to 2 then across the pond again to 6 for the second lap and finishing from marks 2 to 8. There were several close finishes and despite Brian managing to miss the mark at 3     (which he himself set outside his range of vision!), the black boat once again took the honours with Paul 2nd and Dave 3rd.

ROUND TWO

It was the good old days at the pond for round 2 of the Summer Series with eight skippers taking part. A warm welcome was given to Phil Parsons (sail number 10) and George Younger (sail number 92) who seemed to enjoy their guest appearances and hopefully will join us on a weekly basis.
The wind was slight but seemed to be only on the podium side of the pond, so a narrow course was set starting from between the pontoon and Mark 1 to Mark 7, then to Mark 6 and back to Mark 1 for two laps, ending as usual at Mark 8.
Roger got off to a great start by winning Race 1 but then Brian took the next three, Dave winning Race 5 and Roger coming back strongly in Race 6.  Today's honours were again taken by Brian Hartley. Roger Monks came within a point of him but had to settle for 2nd place today. Simon and Dave had equal points but Dave claimed third place due to his win in Race 5.

ROUND THREE

Round 3 took place in very warm conditions with the odd shower and rumble of thunder. There was a good breeze which was particularly strong around a couple of the marks, and caused the odd loss of control resulting in a few penalty turns and apologies.  A triangular course was set starting from between marks 6 and 7 to mark 1 then diagonally across the pond to mark 5 and back to 7 for a couple of laps finishing at the usual mark 8. Brian Hartley had a superb day making an almost clean sweep by winning 5 of the six races and was only 2nd to Roger Monks in Race 3. Other placings were more or less consistent with identical results in some races. Brian Hartley once again took the honours comfortably, with Roger ending up 2nd overall and Dave Johnston 3rd.

ROUND FOUR

It was good to see seven skippers turning out on a bright and breezy day with quite strong gusts which made it difficult to maintain control at times on the No 1 rigs.  Everyone persevered, but there were one or two minor casualties throughout the course of the day.
A figure of 8 course was set from between marks 6 and 7, to mark 3, then to mark 1, across to 5 and back to 7.  Competition was close between Brian and Roger, with Brian taking 3 races and Roger 2. Simon sneaked in with a win in Race 4. The honours for the day fell once again to Brian with Roger a close 2nd and Dave 3rd. Special mention must be given today to John Wray who had his most successful day to date, with a 2nd place in Race 4 and a 3rd in Race 3. Watch out Brian!
Brian's victory today ensures his overall victory in the series with an insurmountable 100% record, so congratulations to him once again. As the winner of the series is now decided, I propose that unless anyone has any objection, the Summer Series is now complete and we can start the  Trafalgar Trophy in a couple of weeks - weather permitting of course.
